I love Comic Sans

Comic Sans from Sam and Anita on Vimeo.

Of course I don't but I would love to see your faces right about now.
But of course I don't like comic sans. It's a widely misused typeface and it's
default kerning is disgusting and angers me.What I do love about comic sans,
is that one stage in our lives we have seen it as a default font in windows or used it,
most likely as children designing something "fun"and"cool" maybe for a school project It's once,as designers we have knowledge of other, nicer typefaces that we automatically shun this hideous but once loved typeface. We have this almost snobby approach when parading around an area eg.town center. and we see it being used and compare it to other, better typefaces and boast how "You could've done better".
My desktop background at uni began as a simple I love Comic sans with a heart.
But I think someone strongly dissagreed with me and decided to change my background to a default mac one.
Caught up in the game I then changed it again to I love comic sans
and again,it was changed. This time to "H is for Helvetica"

I then fought back with this:

It's a Living.
When walking through the city center of Birmingham there was a street cleaner.
It was a relatively sunny day yet this street cleaner persisted on wearing a woolly beanie, and a woolly fleece/jumper under a luminous visor jacket. This man seemed to be lost in his world of rubbish. So I quickly took a photo and the result was him just staring into blankness. Now,call me corny but this could easily be taken as a metaphor as if he were looking into the blankness of his life.I walked past the man with accompanied by my friends and said what a "job to have" and he quickly cried "It's a living".
The result of that day was this:

The hand drawn street cleaner with imperfect lines and then scanned in gave it this dirty "piece of rubbish" look which suited the mans occupation fine.I contrasted his statement by using clean and cooured type on top of the dirty surface.
Nuts:3d type

I designed a typeface based on nuts(and bolts) for a college brief and the second part of that brief was to make it 3D.
It felt daunting making type 3d as we are so used to seeing it printed or on a computer screen as a 2d image.I made the typeface out of wood and decided to make a couple more and build up a relief. Each cut out was smaller than the other so when put together the tails/extenders would appear to sprout out from the foreground type.
As this typeface was based on nuts,I thought it would be appropriate to photograph it in a workers environment; tools etc.So I went along with my dad on one of his jobs and decided it was the perfect opportunity to photograph it.

I was told I was able to post my own work on my main blog.
So here it goes;
Nightmares gig Poster: I was approached by an indie band named Nightmares. They had seen my previous work and I was asked to design a poster to promote a gig.I happily agreed and was left only with the word."Nightmares"
The first thing that came to mind was monsters under beds, bogeyman and the dark, things that a child would have nightmares about.I started scribbling some ideas down and used dark colours and creepy lettering.Looking back at it i thought it never communicated this band to be an indie band but a more "gothic". I felt stuck. This communicates having nightmares etc but I couldnt get it to communicate the band.I looked further into the meaning of nightmares from my own experience. It's a popular phrase to say that a baby/toddler is being a "Nightmare" ;Babies misbehaving etc. So I turned the noun into a adjective. This made the brief more flexible.I am very familiar with Johnny Hardstaff's work and his production drawings include a baby attatched to machinary which gives an uncomfortable vibe. The heavy/sinsiter lookin machinary contrasts perfectly against the innocent baby.I took instant inspiration from this and incorperated it into my work.Unfortunately the development work and some of the final outcomes for this are back in Birmingham and is being used for educational purposes.
